THE SECOND SUMMER OF THE SISTERHOOD by Ann Brashares

I have just read the coming of age novel The Second Summer of the Sisterhood by Ann Brashares. This story follows the further adventures of lifelong best friends Lena, Bridget, Carmen and Tibby in “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” where a pair of jeans seemed to fit each one of them perfectly and brought each of them an adventure when in their possession. In this installment the girls continue to share the pants and believe that adventures happen because of the pants. Carmen tries to find her true love but instead it is her mother who finds love and is now distracted, leaving Carmen even more on her own and more needing of her friends. Lena gets a summer job and tries to forget about Kostas, the boy she met last summer in Greece, but each time she wears the pants she remembers the amazing summer that they had and longs to see him again. Bridget goes to see her maternal grandmother who her father, for some reason does not trust, so he has kept her and Bridget separated. Tibby is trying not to fall for a guy that she meets at a summer college program on filmmaking. A favorite moment is when all the girls reunite at the end of the summer and spend the whole night talking about their summer adventures. When they leave the room to go downstairs, the girls see their moms laughing and giggling just like them. They know that their friendship will last their whole lives just like their moms. Although the girls had to face new problems they all managed to keep their friendship strong, proving that no matter what happens, your true friends will always be there to pick up the pieces when you fall. The moment is interrupted by the sad thought that one mom is missing from the group.
