CIRQE DU FREAK: THE LAKE OF SOULS by Darren Shan

Harkat Mulds, a little person, is plagued by nightmares to the brink of insanity. When he is offered a chance of freedom from the invisible prison of sleep, he accepts it whole heartedly. The offer is made by the malicious Desmond Tiny, and there is always a catch in his deals. Harkat must complete a number of tasks and fight back countless obstacles to find who he was in his past life, and to fish in the Lake of Souls. An especially memorable part was when his best friend, Darren Shan, a vampire assistant, hears the news, and he agrees to complete the journey alongside Harkat. In the strange and mysterious world they are sent, impossible things occur daily, and forces of nature are trampled upon by the many grotesque and interesting creatures. Desmond gives them a list of unbelievable objectives to conquer, yet they face them bravely and with intelligence. Snarling panthers jump out at them, giant toads attack them, pyromaniac dragons engulf them in flames, and a cannibal tries to cut them up. The author tells the story so dramatically that I felt as if I was reliving the story. I yelped with terror as the dragons dove in for a fresh kill; I wept tears of happiness as Darren braved the dangers of the toad and rolled past it. To see if the duos’ prayers of survival are answered, or if their quest to the Lake of Souls is completed, read Cirque Du Freak: The Lake of Souls.
